Phantom -The Phantom is a very popular American character that was created by Lee Falk. This super-hero character has been featured in many media forms like comic books, video games, Live-action movie, TV, films, and action figure toys. Today, there are different Phantom toys selling in the market for the fans of this great fictional hero.

History - This super-hero character first appeared in a daily newspaper on 17th February, 1936. It followed a color strip on Sunday newspaper on 29th May, 1939 and both of these strips are still running. During the popularity peak, these strips were read by more than a hundred million people.

Lee Falk, the creator died in 1999. Currently, the strip is produced by Tony DePaul in assistance with artist Paul Ryan.

Today, new stories of Phantom are published through comic books in many parts of the world. The major publishers are - Moonstone Books (USA), Egmont (Scandinavia) Finland, Frew Publications (Australia), Eura Editoriale (Italy) and Eurobooks (India).

The character of Phantom is not the first official costumed crime-fighter, but the credit goes to him for wearing the skintight costume for the first time that become a hallmark in the world of comic book superheroes,. He is also the first to wear a mask.

Biography – The story is set in the jungles of a fictional country in Africa, ‘Bangalla’. There is a myth (The Ghost Who Walks), an indestructible guardian that is very powerful and fights all kinds of injustice for the innocents. It is believed that he has existed for generations, so he is though as immortal. Actually, the Phantom character is descended from past twenty crime-fighter generations that all adopt the same persona. The story begins with a new generation Phantom that takes on the duty from his dying father swearing the 'Oath of the Skull’ to devote his life to destruct greed, piracy, cruelty and injustice of all types.

The story of phantom comic book sometimes goes in the flashback adventures of past generation Phantoms.

Costume and Weapons –

The Phantom has a black mask and a skintight bodysuit that is purple in color. He has period-appropriate side-arms. He carried two M1911 pistols in a belt with ‘skull’ buckle. Earlier, the first writer Falk made Phantom use guns for shooting out the opponent’s guns, but another writer Peter David parted ways and he wrote stories in which Phantom would shoot to specially wound the enemies. The Phantom is the first fictional super-hero wearing the skintight costume and a mask.
Originally Falk envisioned a grey costume for Phantom naming the creation ‘The Gray Ghost’. But, later in the Sunday strip launched in 1939, the costume was in purple color. Interestingly, Falk continued to refer to the costume as gray in the some strips, but eventually he accepted the purple color. The basic concept of the Phantom costume is appearance of a ‘Jungle Idol’ and the later the color also changed as purple referring to the ‘jungle berries’.

However, it is interesting to note here that in the comic books, the costume is colored in different colors like in Scandinavia it is blue, while in Italy, Turkey, and Brazil, it is red.
